Magnetic Hand Display Box for Paint is Dead
Client: Paint is Dead | Scope: 3D scanning, CAD design, prototyping & a small production run
The Problem
Paint is Dead wanted a display case for their glove, worn on a mannequin hand. Not a generic box, but an enclosure shaped around the hand itself, with the glove front and center and the brand label visible.
A hand is about as organic a shape as it gets. Every finger sits at a different angle and the glove adds its own bulk, so a case built from measurements alone would never fit right.

Scanning the Hand
I 3D scanned the mannequin hand with the glove on, so the scan captured the real finished shape: the fingers, the knuckles, the cuff and the base.

Designing the Encapsulation
Using the scan, I modeled a two-piece box around the hand. The back is a deep shell with a pocket that cradles the hand and its base. The front is a cover that follows the contours of the fingers and fist, so the case itself reads as a hand. The two halves are held together with embedded magnets, so it opens and closes cleanly with no hardware showing.

Prototyping
The first prototype was printed in black to check the fit. I test fit the gloved hand in the back shell, checked that the magnets lined up, and made sure the cover closed over the fingers without crushing the glove.

Matching the Brand Color
The color had to match the glove. I lined up several pink filaments against it and landed on Polymaker Lotus Pink for the cover, paired with Bambu Lab Matte White PLA for the back.

The Result
The final boxes pair a Lotus Pink cover with a Matte White back. The gloved hand sits snugly in the white shell, and the pink cover snaps on with the magnets.

I printed a run of five for the client.
