Custom Light Boxes: How We Build Them

Light boxes are one of the clearest examples of what happens when our different services work together instead of separately. A single finished light box touches laser cutting, 3D printing, UV printing, and electronics wiring — here's exactly how one comes together, start to finish.

What a Light Box Actually Is

A light box is a backlit panel — a logo, a design, text, artwork — that glows from behind or along its edges. Done well, the design seems to float in front of the light source rather than just sitting in front of a lit-up background. Getting that effect right depends on three things coming together correctly: the panel material, the design printed on it, and the lighting behind it.

Step 1: Laser-Cut Acrylic Panel

The panel itself is acrylic, cut and shaped on the laser. Acrylic is the material of choice here because it's an excellent light diffuser — it spreads light evenly across its surface instead of showing a hot spot right where the LEDs sit. Step 2: UV-Printed Artwork

The design itself gets UV printed directly onto the acrylic. This is where full-color logos, artwork, or lettering happen — permanently bonded to the panel rather than a vinyl decal that can peel or fade over time. UV ink is also what gives the light box its glow-from-within look: light passes through and around the printed layer differently than it does through bare acrylic, which is part of what makes the design read as floating rather than flat.

Step 3: 3D Printed Case

The housing that holds everything together — the frame, the internal structure, the mounting for the electronics — is a 3D printed part we design ourselves. This is where the project becomes genuinely custom rather than an off-the-shelf light box with a sticker on it: the case gets designed around the exact panel size, mounting needs, and where it's going to live.

Step 4: COB LED Lighting

COB (chip-on-board) LED strips get wired into the case to provide even, edge-lit illumination. COB LEDs are the right call here specifically because they produce a continuous strip of light rather than visible individual point sources — important for avoiding the "dotted" look you get from lower-quality LED strips shining through a diffusing panel.

Why This Only Works as One Project

Each of these steps depends on the ones around it. The acrylic has to be cut to fit the case exactly. The UV print has to account for how light will pass through it. The case has to be designed around both the panel dimensions and the LED strip's power and mounting needs. Handling this as four separate vendor relationships — a laser shop, a print shop, a UV printer, and an electronics person — means someone has to coordinate tolerances and timing across all of them. Building it in-house means those decisions get made together from the start.
